My mom, my brother and I went out tonight, picked up my sister in Manila and ate out in the Saisaki/Dad's/Kamayan buffet restaurant. My sister and mom decided to just have the japanese buffet, while my brother and I chose to have the ultimate buffet.
So, there I was, standing in front of the ham/chicken table, near the pasta bar, with my plate on my hand. Then, one of the waiters standing near me asked if I wanted pasta. Since I doubted I could eat it with the rest, I declined. Then, he proceeded to ask me, "Eh, mam, braces? Retainers?"
I was dense, and at first, I thought he was making a crack about my teeth...then I realized it all had to do with pasta (dentist stuff). So, I just smiled and went on asking for a slice of ham. Suddenly, about five waiters had gathered around me and were asking me if I wanted this or that. I was getting confused, so I again said no politely, then turned away to move towards the Dad's buffet table. One of the waiters actually followed me all the way to that buffet table and started asking me if I wanted lasagna, with the others calling out their own questions. I wanted to yell, "Leave me alone and let me get my food in peace!"
For freak's sake, it's a freaking buffet...you're supposed to get your own food--self-service you know. You walk to whatever buffet bar that attracts you and serve yourself. I was getting pretty weirded out coz they kept asking me if I wanted this and that. I guess it freaked me out a little coz when I was getting ice cream, and this waiter came up to me and asked me if I wanted help coz I was having a hard time with it, I kind of snapped at him, and told him, no, I'll get it myself. *rolls eyes*
About an hour ago, we got back home. My dad was already there, since he had a meeting and he wasn't able to go with us. So, pumunta ako sa kanya at nagmano. All of a sudden, he was pulling me to the dinner table and pushing me onto a chair. Then, he proceeded in this tone of voice that tells you he's pissed off about something.
Well, it scared me, and I started mentally trying to think of what I'd done wrong. My dad's a quiet sort, but when he gets mad, you better run for cover, coz he gets pretty unreasonable.
Apparently it wasn't us at all. It was my mom. See, when we were in Manila, mom was talking to dad on the phone while we were walking towards Saisaki. She was teasing him, Ganyan ka naman...mas gusto mong kasama mga tito mo kaysa sa amin. You know...normal teasing. Apparently it had pissed him off. Now it just so happened that my sister was practically half-asleep while with us because of her duty, and she hadn't heard her phone ringing. It was dad, and he was even more pissed off.
He was mad because my mom was telling him those things in front of us. We tried to explain that we hadn't even heard what my mom was telling dad, and that we understood why he couldn't come with us to Manila. And we were telling the truth! It never even crossed our minds to accuse him of thinking more about his uncles than us. We tried explaining about how my sister could barely even open her eyes all throughout dinner, and didn't hear the phone, but dad had gone drinking with his uncles, and I guess he was too unreasonable already.
Damn it. I was left alone with him downstairs because I was washing the dishes, and he kept right on with his tirade. I tried to explain, but he wouldn't listen. I didn't even know why I was trying to defend myself when I hadn't done anything wrong. My dad said it had been a bad joke.
And to that, I wanted to say, how many times had he done the same thing to me? Mom had only been teasing, but he had, several times, been serious when he told me that I was more interested in hanging out with my friends than in going with them whenever I told them that I couldn't go with them because I had to study. How did he think that made me feel whenever he told me that?
