I barely escaped what would surely have been a torturous night for me.
It was something my parents and I fought about last Sunday. Someone invited my dad to his birthday tonight. Someone related to Drilon or something or other. Whatever. Politics people. Anyway, he went on to text my dad to bring along my mom and me with him. Apparently, the guy's the dad of a former blockmate of Cathy. I've met her before, and she seemed nice in school, but I don't know her. I don't even talk to her in school, except for a few smiles whenever we pass each other in the hallways of Ateneo. But her dad said that there would be more Atenean college students there than older people (though it is his birthday). College students who are in my batch. So, he suggested I come along.
I didn't want to go even then. I mean, Candy's nice and all, but sheesh, I'd be out of place there with her friends. Hence, the fight with my parents, ending with them calling me selfish just because I said I was hoping to have a night to rest after the philo exam and the past few weeks' theology hell. So, I just shut up and resigned myself to going.
I'd mentioned it to Cerz, Yumi, and Ina earlier this week, coz I had to tell Ina that I wasn't sure I could go to her directing play coz my parents were mad at me (I ended up going anyway). Then, I told them whose party it was. When Cerz heard that it was Candy, she looked surprised, and proceeded to tell me that she'd gone to a party before with Candy's crowd, and apparently, Candy's crowd is not exactly the kind of crowd I'd feel comfortable in. Because when they party, they party hard. Even Cerz, according to her, sometimes felt uncomfortable witht them. Siyempre, mas ninerbiyos ako dun, diba? But still, up to around an hour ago, I was all set to go.
But then, Cerz called up today. She told me that a friend of hers, who sometimes hang out with us when we're all eating in the caf, had invited her to go to a party in Bicutan...to a party of Candy. Cerz realized it was the same party I was all set to go. Now, this friend of Cerz is the kind of person you can easily talk to when in school. But based from all of Cerz's stories of parties she'd been to, a non-partying girl like me probably wouldn't last in a party with his and Candy's crowd. I begged Cerz to go, too, but she said that if my parents see her there, and she'd probably end up drinking anyway, they probably would not, well, appreciate it.
I don't think I'm a prude. In fact, I can be pretty rebellious compared to my siblings. Maybe a little conservative, but not Opus Dei UA&P conservative. But I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't have vices of that sort (only the junk food and pocketbook sort). Sobrang mapapahiya ako dun. Everyone would expect me to hang out with the Ateneans in that party...and then, I'd just sit there, not knowing what to do.
So, I talked to my parents just before they left, told them that Candy's crowd is just too different from mine, and I'd just humiliate myself there. My mom, when she actually heard me out, realized the truth in that, and backed me up when I talked to my dad. And so, I got to stay.
It's so nice to win an argument for once in my life.
