Yesterday was my sister's UP College of Medicine graduation and the end of her internship in PGH. Actually, it didn't start out pretty well. Right off the bat, my dad got mad at my sister. My dad just quit smoking, so he's very irritable lately. Anyway, he was asking my sister something, and I suppose the my sister sort of made a mistake about the tone of her voice. It pissed my dad off, and he told my sister, and I quote, "Walang kwenta ang pagiging magaling niyo kung mayayabang kayo." Lately, he's been off about UP students, saying they're all arrogant. Anyway, my sister got pissed herself and got up from the table and left.
It was a bad start, and both my sister and my dad were in bad moods. Ate spent a considerable part of that morning avoiding dad. But at least, the mood lightened by lunchtime.
We went to the UP theater for the graduation at about 12:00. Of course, I had to go through the hassle again of picking out clothes. My mom and I always seem to get into a minor argument everytime there's an event wherein I have to wear something more...er, presentable...than those I usually wear. Mom didn't like what I ended up choosing--my loose black drawstring pants (that I usually pretend to be semi-formal) and my green and blue striped t-shirt. She wanted me to wear something nicer for the family picture taking before the graduation. Luckily, she finally gave up on me and let me go to UP in those clothes.
My sister's boyfriend, Jim, and his parents and sister met us when we entered the theater lobby. It was the first time I met his parents. They're...really old. I mean, considering that Jim is only about two years older than my sister, his parents are about 20 years older than my own parents. His dad's really quirky, and very much a social activist.
The graduation process was...long. Very long. Senator Manny Villar was the guest speaker, and he talked some about the paltry national budget for health. Then, there was the capping and hooding of about 250 graduates--PGH graduates and post-graduate interns. I was surprised to find out that my sister was outstanding intern in orthopedics. Not that my sister isn't smart. She is. But she never mentioned it. Oh, also found it funny that Jim and my sister's ex-boyfriend, Francis, were onstage at the same time. Both their last names start with T. I liked their class song. And I decided that before I found out that it was my sister who wrote the lyrics and melody, mind you. It was about their white uniforms, and the different symbolisms of it.
There was a mini-celebration in our house afterwards. My aunts, uncles and cousins on my father's side came to our house, along with the ones who went to China with them a week ago. I spent most of it with the cousins who were closer to my age--Marvin, Maika and Richelle.
As for my younger cousins...well, between them, I think those monsters kept our neighbors awake and cursing all night last night. They kept screaming and running around the house. Most of them were boys. You get the picture. And then, the Magic Sing was hooked up. Michael probably had the most fun, considering that he was dancing and singing (more like yelling) all night. I tricked him some, giving him song numbers and ending up making him sing songs like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Like a Virgin. Hey, it kept the aunts laughing all throughout Michael's performance.
Man, the energy of kids. Was I ever THAT energetic? I got tired just by looking at them dancing and screaming and jumping all night. Makes me feel like I'm 60, not 20.
