Day by day

Yumi, as agreed, borrowed the humongous encyclopedia dictionary from the Fine Arts Department and took it home last night. She brought it today, and I got to see how incredibly informative it really is. Dang! It even has touch-tone telephone in it. And a bunch of multi-word terms. There are even stuff about people! Ay, naku, Edlyn, Encyclopedia Dictionary nga eh!

Anyway, it was pretty damn heavy, especially coupled with my pretty damn heavy backpack, which also held a Merriam Webster Dictionary (which wasn't anywhere near as impressive as that Encyclopedia Dictionary of the Fine Arts Department), as waell as my brother's English Etymology Dictionary (I learned my lesson last semester). Turned out I never used that any of those pretty damn heavy dictionaries. Dang it. Wanted to heave it at Xander's head when I lugged it back to the Fine Arts Dept afterwards. Almost heaved it at the head of a guy (freshman?) waiting in front of the ORP on the way. Well, not really. He saw me carrying it, and he said, "Wow! Ang laki niyan ah!" I looked at him and raised my eyebrows. "Bakit, gusto mo?"

Not that My Lord didn't call me. Yep, he did. "Ah...Miss Santiago. My favorite." Damn it, really hate it when teachers do that. Makes it more humiliating when you don't do as well as expected. Last time anyone said that was back in first year, first sem, in En 13, with Mr. Labella. He predicted that I would become his favorite student in class. Made it doubly humiliating when I got a...C+? or was it a B? ...for Fiction. And now, DJ's sarcastic comment has again humiliated me when I screwed up in recitation today. Especially since I have classmates who were once my batchmates in Poveda. I really hate having Povedan
batchmate classmates in college.

I was able to relate to the discussion though. We talked about concepts, and the danger of just limiting yourself to concepts. Such as the word "son". A son is the offspring of a father and a mother. There are other concepts for that word. But sometimes, you can really get trapped in those concepts. You forget that there are ideas behind that identity that goes beyond those concepts. Are you just the child of an older generation? Can't you be anything else other than what you had been born with? Isn't that the way it often ends up? Like in my family. Ah...we're children of garden shop owners/landscapers. Someday, we would be expected to take over the family business. It is our duty to uphold the family tradition. Ah...you're the sister of Edhel? The genius one who's in UP Med School? The one who's going to be a doctor? You must be smart, too! So, what are you taking for college?...Creative writing?... Oh. What's that?

Screw all that. I'm not just my father and mother's daughter. I'm not just the little sister. I'm my own self.

Anyway...

I hung out at the library today...again. Edlyn, you nerd! Nah...I was reading a book I'd snagged from the Fiction section :P Saw a bunch of freshmen having their library tour. Damn, I really miss freshman year. Even that boring library tour.

We finally met our theology professor, Mr. (Dr.?) Manuel Tejido. He makes me think of a combination of a kindly grandfather, a storyteller (Lolo Basyong), and, yeah, Darls, Dumbledore. His voice is calm, clear, and strong (malumanay), reminds me of the recorded voice at Enchanted Kingdom ("Kindly wait until the gondola glides to a complete stop... Should you wish to ride again, kindly alight and fall in line again. Thank you, and have a wonderful day at Enchanted Kingdom!" Tama ba?) But I will never make the mistake of underestimating him. He looks like he can roar if anyone messes with him, kindly grandfather or not.

But I'm kind of excited about the translation work (naks!). English to Filipino translation of a section of the Summa Theologica, I think. I've always been interested in the Translation genre of the Creative Writing program, though it had never been offered in my three years in Ateneo. Would be fun to try it. And there's a part of me that is also kind of looking forward to the immersion experience. Maybe it's what I need to, I don't know, grow up?

Speaking of growing up, I've been trying to search for companies offering internship in my field. I really want to take an OJT. I found an ad in friendster about this OJT in a publishing company. I even posted a question on the page, but when I got the reply from the ad owner, the ad expired and got deleted! I couldn't even reply or get the contact info of the ad owner anymore! Damn... I'm trying to search the ABS-CBN website for internships, but I can't find the stuff Yumi said she found.

I really want a part-time job. Been pestering Xander about one in the Fine Arts Dept, but I don't know if it will actually push through before I graduate. I need this. Not just for the money, but also for the experience, the training, the discipline. And maybe I need it for my self-esteem as well. Maybe it's what I need to escape the Second Floor syndrome. (By the way, I can't believe there's actually a song with that title! Wonder what it's about?)
